Supreme Court Decisions on California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) Represent Tremendous Progress for Gay Men’s Health Equity; Still Much Work to Do to Achieve Full Equality for People of All Races, Ethnicities and Sexual Orientations

Washington, DC – Today’s Supreme Court rulings on California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) align with NASTAD’s ongoing efforts to address health equity among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) of all races and ethnicities. The National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) and NASTAD’s policy statement on gay men/MSM both stress the importance of reducing stigma related to HIV/AIDS, and routinizing HIV care as a part of overall health care. NASTAD’s work in reducing the stigma faced by gay men/MSM, and addressing structural barriers that lead to poor health outcomes among gay men/MSM are significantly advanced by a social recognition that same-sex unions are valuable and worth codifying. Washington, DC – The National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) recognized John Auerbach with its Lifetime Achievement Award at its 22nd Annual Meeting of state health department HIV and hepatitis program leaders last month. The meeting takes place every May in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Auerbach is the former Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health where he oversaw more than 3,000 employees that included four public health hospitals, the State Laboratory, several regulatory bodies, and numerous programmatic units addressing chronic and infectious disease, substance abuse, environmental health, tobacco control, children and adolescent health, and emergency preparedness. Washington, DC – Ann Robbins, Manager of the HIV/STD Prevention and Care Branch of the Texas Department of State Health Services and Randy Mayer, Chief of the Bureau of HIV, STD, and Hepatitis at the Iowa Department of Public Health were honored with the 2013 Nicholas A. Rango Leadership Award by the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) at its 22nd Annual Meeting of state health department HIV and hepatitis program leaders last month. The meeting takes place every May in Washington, D.C. The award is named for one of NASTAD’s founding members, Nicholas A. Rango, MD, PhD, who was director of the New York State AIDS Institute before his death of AIDS in 1993. NASTAD gives this award to recognize the state AIDS director, state and territorial health department staff member, or NASTAD staff member who best exemplifies Dr. Rango’s qualities of superior intelligence, dedication, activism in government, and impatience in leading the fight against HIV/AIDS and/or viral hepatitis. Dee with a Partnership Award at its 22nd Annual Meeting of state health department HIV and hepatitis program leaders last month. The meeting takes place every May in Washington, D.C. Ms. Dee is a founder of AIDS Action Baltimore (AAB), a non-profit organization dedicated to the support and education of people with HIV and the prevention of HIV. AAB provides educational, financial, and emotional support for people with HIV and HIV prevention services in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Washington, DC– The National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) recognized Representative Barbara Lee (CA-13th District) with the Partnership Award at its 22nd Annual Meeting of state health department HIV and hepatitis program leaders last month. The meeting takes place every May in Washington, D.C. Barbara Lee is a long-standing member of the U.S. House of Representatives and has been a champion of HIV/AIDS on a variety of issues both domestic and global.

“Barbara has long been a champion of efforts to end HIV/AIDS and advance human rights here at home and abroad. Her achievements in Congress and in the HIV community are unquestionable,” noted NASTAD Executive Director Julie Scofield.

Over the years, Rep. Lee has:

  • Been a key sponsor in establishing and supporting the Minority AIDS Initiative.
  • Been an active member of the House Appropriations Committee, fighting for funding for both domestic and global HIV programs in her role on both the Labor-HHS and the State-Foreign Ops Subcommittees. Continue reading
